A living room you want to sink into
The living room is where the whole house slows down at the end of the day, so it should feel that way. Start with the sofa: a couple of sheepskin cushions and a throw over the arm change it more than you would think. Then look down. A design rug under the coffee table or a hide in front of the fireplace pulls the room together. Here is what we would use, and how.

Soft things for the living room

Styling a modern living room
Modern living rooms tend to be clean and a little cool: straight lines, pale walls, not much on the floor. That is exactly why they need texture.
- Soften the hard pieces. Drape a sheepskin over a wooden or leather chair. It warms the seat and breaks up all the straight lines.
- Stick to two or three colors. Natural white, sand and grey go with almost everything. Add one darker hide if the room needs some weight.
- Work in layers. A short hair rug on the floor, long hair cushions on the sofa and a throw on top give the eye somewhere to rest.

Furnishing a small living room
A small living room is about using the space you have well, not filling it.
- Go pale. Light hides and cushions bounce the light around and make the room feel wider.
- Use the seats you already have. A sheepskin over an armchair or a stool adds comfort without adding furniture.
- Pick one statement. One bean bag or one round design rug is enough. Let it be the thing people notice.
