Sheepskin throws and blankets

A throw is the layer you actually reach for. Over the arm of a sofa, folded at the end of a bed, or pulled across your lap on a cold evening. This is the full range, from real sheepskin to mohair, alpaca and cashmere.

Sheepskin, or a woven throw?

A sheepskin throw is a hide with the hair left on. It is the warmest and the most substantial thing here, and it holds its loft for years rather than flattening the way a synthetic fleece does. The curly plaids at 24x47 in are the easy entry point at around $279, sized for a chair or the end of a bed. The larger curly throw at 55x71 in covers a sofa properly.

A woven throw is a different thing: mohair, alpaca or cashmere spun into cloth. Lighter, more drapey, easier to wash, and it starts at $99. If you want something you can throw over a shoulder rather than arrange over furniture, that is the one.

Sizes, in plain terms

At 24x47 in you are covering a chair, a bench, or one person's lap. At 51x67 in you have a proper sofa throw for two. At 55x71 in and up it works as a bedspread across the foot of a double bed. Measure the piece of furniture first; a throw that is slightly too small always looks like an accident.

Looking after it

Sheepskin wants shaking out two or three times a month and a vacuum on the lowest setting. Smooth hair likes an occasional brush, curly does not, so just shake those. Spot clean marks with cool water and a mild liquid detergent, dry flat away from radiators, and never tumble dry. Mohair and cashmere prefer a cool delicate wash or hand washing, dried flat.
